Turnips

What Season

Turnips are a fast-growing root vegetable.

Best suited for spring and autumn planting. They prefer cool temperatures between 10-20°C and can tolerate light frost, which can actually improve their sweetness.

Turnips (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa) are a root vegetable cultivated for their edible swollen taproots and leafy greens. They come in various colors, typically white or purple-skinned with crisp, mildly spicy flesh. Turnips are a domesticated variety of wild Brassica rapa, originating in Europe and Asia, and have been a staple crop for both human and livestock consumption for centuries.

Sowing

Sow it were you grow it!

Carrots don't like to be moved once rooted, so sow them once into the ground and grow without moving.

  • Sow seeds directly in the soil

  • Plant 1 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart.
  • Thin seedlings to encourage strong root development.
  • Can be planted in succession for continuous harvests.
  • Turnips are ready to harvest in 30-60 days, depending on the variety.
  • Harvest them when roots reach 5-8 cm in diameter for the best flavor. The leaves are also edible and can be picked throughout the growing season.
Everything you need

GROWING YOUR FIRST TURNIP

  • Fast-growing root vegetable – Ready in as little as 30-60 days.

  • Grows best in cool weather – Spring and autumn are ideal seasons.

  • Roots and greens are edible – Both parts of the plant are nutritious.

  • Prefers loose, well-draining soil – Hard soil can lead to stunted roots.

  • Can be grown in containers – Needs at least 20 cm deep soil.

  • Harvest when small for best flavor – Large roots can become woody.

  • Avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizers – Too much nitrogen encourages leaf growth over root growth.

  • Resistant to light frost – Cold temperatures can actually make them sweeter.
